Roadblock for volunteering

Boys and Girls Club doesn't want me as a volunteer because I refuse to write down my SSN for them (I did offer to give it to them verbally). I understand that a SSN is needed for a background check, but I would like to know more about how they protect a volunteer's personal information. This is really unfortunate. I was really looking forward to volunteering to help with the Powerhour homework hour.
